I've finally finished the book and I absolutely loved it! As I London lover, I was amazed by the author's knowledge of London. I was also impressed by the use of latin throughout the book! The author is obviously a very smart and humorous guy It's a fast paced, enjoyable, well-told story. I guess it's one of those books that can "relax" your mind. I've also wondered about the US title of the book and I can't understand why it was changed to Midnight Riot. It doesn't make any sense and I would really like to find out why...

According to Goodreads, the publishers changed the title and cover to appeal more to an "American demographic" thinking that people would pick it up with a darker title and cover imagine. Although, in recent prints the cover has been reverted to the map to match with the rest of the series.

Yes I've finished it ! I really liked what I'll call the "actual" ending, meaning the resolution of the main plot, I thought the "travelling" around London was a nice touch, I like how it helped tying up the Mr Punch storyline with the Thames "family" storyline. It was good to see Peter succeeding but I like that it was not easy for him. If by "incident" you are referring to the young man with a well deserved missing body part, I didn't liked it, I thought it didn't add anything to the story and was unnecessary crude I hope you'll like the second book too ! I've been thinking about purchasing it but I'm trying to pace myself in my spending so I'm going to wait a bit more >< I too think that we will learn about Nightingale here and there, in small bits and I have a feeling it will be a nice addition to the story over time. I think you are right' Nightingale avoid answering certain questions too many times for it to be not grey areas in is personality. He was ever severely traumatised or use to see things from a more evil side, I hope it's the second option ! Regarding the Catcher in the Rye, I think it's one of these books that you ever love or hate with no in between. I think some people dislike the Catcher in the Rye because it's a story where not much happens and the main character can appear as a whiny prick but I personnally really enjoys it as I find Sallinger's writting style really enticing, it's both easy to read and well constructed and I think you can really dig deep into the story and behind what it looks like. I also read the book at a point in my life when things were changing fast and I was a bit lodt so I connected with the main character in that level. I'd suggest you read it, so you can make up your own opinion about it, and then I'd be happy to dicuss it with you ! I liked how the author wrapped up the story and characters-it gave us the finished polished look but with enough room for more for the sequels. Yes and I agree about the missing body part incident.. it felt so out of place to me. BUT I can tell you that in the 2nd book that plot is continued so it is not so out of place as I originally thought. I totally understand about saving money.. books are my down fall but I don't regret getting the second one so soon. Thank you, for the information on the Catcher in the Rye maybe I'll check it out. That being said I do recommend getting the sequel if you enjoyed the first book. My only thing is that it is shorter than the first. Personally I've been reading longer novel 500-1000 pages so the story is seems quick to me. It left me with a similar impression, I liked how this part of the story is well wrapped up while leaving enough hints to tie us into a sequel I'm relieved to learn that this incident is part of a wider plot in the second book because if it was not the case I would just be disturbed and angered by it ; to me, it just seemed like the author went "hey ! how about I throw something disgusting in there just for the heck of it" -_- I'm definitely going to by it soon ! I just need to mix it up with the other things I'm reading as I made the infortunate decision of getting involved with comic books and this situation is getting a little out of hands >< I too am used to read really long books but if the plot is well lead, I don't mind reading shorter stories

I'm glad to know you enjoyed the book as well ! Like you, I'm a fan of London (though I've only been there like twice as it seems like everytime I travl to the UK, it's in some random other place ^^) and as I read the book, I felt the general feeling of the city, I remember the setting of some of the most crowded streets, and the ambience of good old pubs… it was very enjoyable ! I too was amazed by the use of latin, and though I can't remember anything from my six (6 !!) years of latin classes, I still managed to picked up the spells quickly as the author was clear in his explanations. About the change of title in the US, I think it's one of this marketing things ? It reminds me of something that's quite common in France where people seems to think it's a good idea to change an english title by another english title just to sell more (like how The Hangover is titles Very Bad Trip here -_-)

It probably would have been a good idea for them to keep "London" in the title The Latin part remind me of how in Harry Potter, most of the spells also come from latin and the connecton between latin and magic actually makes sense since magic is an ancient practise and latin use to be the main language for anything written such as books and treaties

Hi All,
I still have 5 chapters to go, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far.
I never used to read anything fantasy based until a couple of years ago, and this definitely sits among the top 10 that I’ve read to date. I enjoyed the language, English is my native tongue but aside from on of two words that were new to me it’s all flowed pretty well so far.
Really like Nightingale, and in my head he’s the one I have the clearest picture of. The dry humour is totally my cup of tea and I gotta few odd looks on the train when I was chuckling away to myself yesterday.
Hoping to finish up tomorrow 😀

Hey everyone! I want to begin by saying how great of an idea this book club was. So thanks to those who came up with it 🙂 When it comes to the book- I really liked the idea of the world. The mix of magic and casual reality was interesting. But the book itself felt very rushed. The author made us dive into this world without knowing much about it and that was kind of a downside for me. I would have liked to be more I introduced into it. Didn't it feel a little like that for you? Maybe the other books in the series explain more about it?

Do you think you'll continue reading the other books in the series? The humor is probably one of the my favorite things about this book. I feel like it matches the characters so well. If you do continue reading on I can tell you that there is more Nightingale in the second book.

I briefly mentioned a similar thought in a previous comment- that we don't know much about this world except for a few little things you have to look out for. I thought it could be because Peter is in a similar situation so as a reader we don't end up knowing more than he does. But I do agree that the book felt very fast paced, I've been reading books more than twice its size so for me it was a nice change. I finished the second book last week and I enjoyed it more than the first one! You find out a little more history of the world and Peter continues his experiments of magic. The ending had a great surprise too.

I do like your idea that the reader knew as much as Peter about the magic. And it is an interesting concept to work with. But Peter was a little too cool when it all happened and maybe that's why it felt a little forced to me.

There was a point in the book where Peter takes a nap-I think at his parents place and I was like WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! The world is burning, there is an evil force out there and you're sleeping! Oh!! Locke Lamora is a fantastic book

I really liked the ending, was a bit sad to see Beverly traded out for Ash as I found her character got me hooked, but will definitely work on the rest of the series to see where it all leads. And poor Leslie.... I'm mean, what can I even say about that. Can you imagine if they tried to transfer this to a TV series? This is the thing about book clubs though, you find a book you like and want to power through all of them, but August's selection is fast approaching.... Never enough time for all the books I want to get through (there are far worse problems to have though).

Ugh I know poor Leslie. Where you surprised by the development with Leslie? I was shocked and didn't see it coming. That being said her story line does continue on in the series and I believe going to be very important in the 3rd book (trying not to give spoilers). If only there was more time in the day.. haha I understand that struggle as the pile of books I want to read is high. Lastly, did you vote for our August selection? We have a poll here and on our twitter
